IndiGo Cadet Pilot Program — Student Guide
Get a premium, step-by-step view of how IndiGo selects cadets (ADAPT → Group Discussion → Personal Interview), what you’re evaluated on, and how the training pathway (CPL → MCC → A320 Type Rating) turns into your Junior First Officer induction.
Programme Snapshot
IndiGo approves cadet training pathways through approved Flight Training Organisations (FTOs). While provider differences exist (location, aircraft fleet, duration, total cost), the approved structure and selection expectation remain consistent: you must pass ALL stages.
Two parts of success
- Selection — ADAPT assessment, Group Discussion, Personal Interview.
- Training journey — Ground School → Flying Training → Licence Conversion (where applicable) → MCC & A320 Type Rating.
Core competencies (always evaluated)
- Teamwork & CRM
- Communication clarity
- Leadership under pressure
- Self-confidence (steady, not arrogant)
- Aviation knowledge
- Adaptability, decision-making, resilience
- Situational awareness
Eligibility Criteria — Check Every Box Before You Apply
This is your “gates open or gates closed” checklist. If you fail early eligibility (especially medical), you’ll lose time, prep momentum, and opportunity windows.
Basic requirements
- Age: 18 to 35 years at time of application (some FTOs may allow up to 40 — confirm).
- Academics: 10+2 with minimum 51% individually in Physics, Mathematics & English. (CBSE Grade Point / Grade C1 accepted.)
- English: fluent written & verbal. (Skyborne requires IELTS 5.5+ equivalent / confirm provider.)
- Passport & background: valid Indian passport for unrestricted worldwide travel; CRC Basic Disclosure Certificate required.
- Tattoos / piercings: candidates with visible tattoos or visible piercings will NOT be considered.
Medical & admin gates
- Medical: DGCA Class 1 (no limitations permitted); BMI strictly checked.
- DGCA computer number: required (Skyborne specifically mentions this).
- NIOS / foreign boards: accepted with required subject marks and equivalency where applicable.
Selection Process — Stage by Stage
IndiGo selects cadets through FTOs and a final IndiGo assessment. You must pass ALL stages — no shortcuts. This timeline shows what happens and what you should prepare for each step.
Overall flow (what you will experience)
Online Application
Fill in the FTO application form online. Some FTOs may charge an assessment fee (provider dependent).
FTO Screening / Assessment
Computer-based aptitude, reasoning & psychometric test. In-person FTO interview. ADAPT assessment (about 3.5–4 hours).
IndiGo Database Check
IndiGo checks prior declines and whether the cooling period has passed. Clearance is required to proceed.
IndiGo Group Task Assessment (GD)
In-person group task with an IndiGo panel observing communication, leadership, listening, and teamwork.
IndiGo Personal Interview
HR motivation + aviation knowledge + live mental maths. Thought process and preparation quality are assessed.
Letter of Intent (LOI) + Training Agreement
Signed in a celebration ceremony. You’re inducted into the programme with IndiGo LOI and your FTO training agreement.
ADAPT → GD → Interview: the consistency rule
- IndiGo evaluates the same pilot competencies in every round.
- GD and Interview are not about “right answers”—they’re about how you think, speak, and collaborate.
- For personality: inconsistency can be flagged. Be honest and consistent across answers.
What makes you “stand out” in person
- Communication clarity: structured and confident answers.
- Active listening: build on others’ points (don’t wait silently).
- Decisiveness with composure: lead calmly; don’t dominate or vanish.
- Aviation context: link discussion to CRM, safety culture, and decision-making.
Training Journey — From Ground School to Flight Deck
IndiGo-approved pathway follows a consistent four-phase structure. Differences between FTOs are primarily about location, flying equipment, fleet, and total duration/cost.
Ground School (DGCA Theory)
~4–6 months • India (FTO campus / Delhi NCR / MP)
DGCA Exams: Navigation, Meteorology, Air Regulations, Technical, RT, ELP.
Note: Some FTOs include 3–5 hours simulator.
Flying Training (CPL + IR + ME)
~10–12 months • India / Overseas
Total Hours: ~195–219 (SE+ME). Licence obtained: CPL + IR + ME endorsement.
Aircraft vary by provider (e.g., Cessna/Piper/Tecnam; overseas Diamond DA40/DA42).
Licence Conversion (Overseas FTOs)
Applicable when flying training occurs overseas
15–17 hours flying checks in India to convert foreign CPL to DGCA CPL/SE/IR.
Duration: ~1–4 months.
MCC & A320 Type Rating
~2–3 months • IndiGo-approved TRTO
MCC: 16h ground + 20h simulator; A320 TR: ground + LOFT/skills tests.
Outcome: Qualified A320 First Officer → Junior First Officer induction.
ADAPT Assessment — 8 Modules (Stage 1)
ADAPT is IndiGo’s standardized assessment platform (Symbiotics). Question types are fixed across batches; only specific questions vary. Every serious candidate should practice all 8 modules.
What you’re tested on
- Timed speed & accuracy (except personality)
- Aviation-context numerical reasoning, physics, and English
- Multitasking under flight-like simulation constraints
- Control & coordination (ball game) and cockpit stabilisation
- Personality consistency across ~300 forced-choice questions
Mod 1: Maths
Speed, distance, time, fuel consumption, bearings. Timed.
Mod 2: Physics
Newton’s Laws, Bernoulli, forces, pressure. Timed.
Mod 3: Reasoning
6 sub-sections: numerical, verbal, spatial, abstract, perceptual speed, working memory. Timed.
Mod 4: FAST
Multitasking: simulated cockpit + questions + background tracking. Timed.
Mod 5: Ball Game
Control & coordination: keep ball centred. Timed.
Mod 6: Flight Simulator
Fly at set speed/altitude following headings/waypoints. Timed.
Mod 7: English
Grammar, sentence correction, vocabulary, comprehension. Timed.
Mod 8: Personality
~300 forced-choice questions (~untimed). Consistency is everything.
Example “how it feels” questions
- Bernoulli: as fluid speed increases, pressure decreases
- Newton’s 2nd Law: if force doubles, acceleration doubles
- Force opposing aircraft through air: Drag
- Four forces in straight & level flight: Lift=Weight, Thrust=Drag
- Next number: 3, 8, 13, __, 23 → 18 (pattern +5)
FAST / Ball / Simulator: performance insights
- Stabilise aircraft first, then answer using gaps — never sacrifice flight control.
- Ball game: use small, smooth corrections (avoid over-correcting).
- Simulator: precision beats speed; stay within the target band.
- English: aviation-context comprehension helps.
- Personality: be honest and consistent (inconsistency can flag you).
Group Discussion & Personal Interview
These rounds confirm you can collaborate under pressure and communicate as a future crew-member. Panels are observing the “how”, not just the “what”.
Stage 2: Group Discussion (GD)
- Topics can be abstract, current affairs, or data/statistics-based cases.
- No fixed order — start when you have a meaningful point.
- Panel observes: communication, listening, leadership, CRM teamwork, composure.
- Golden rule: speak 3–4 times. Don’t dominate. Don’t disappear.
- Typical duration: 15–20 minutes.
Stage 3: Personal Interview
- Single one-on-one or panel interview.
- Assessed on: HR & motivation, aviation knowledge, and live mental maths.
- If you haven’t cleared DGCA papers: expect basic aviation questions (still prepare key fundamentals).
- If cleared DGCA: expect deep follow-ups from your papers.
- Mental maths is live on the spot; accuracy and confidence both count.
