Section 01

Am I eligible?

SIA's Ab Initio programme is a fully sponsored, zero-cost pathway — SIA pays for everything. The trade-off is a rigorous selection process and a 7-year bond from the date you become a First Officer.

CriterionRequirementNotes
EducationGCE 'A' Level, Polytechnic Diploma, or Degree — OR — minimum 5 GCE 'O' Level credits including English, Mathematics, and a Science subject, taken at one sittingStrong academic foundation in Maths and Physics is essential for the aptitude assessment even if not formally required at minimum-entry level.
VisionMyopia not more than 800 degrees; astigmatism not more than 300 degrees — fully correctable with optical aidsPre-surgery visual acuity must also meet this requirement for candidates who have undergone corrective eye surgery.
HeightMinimum 1.58 mRequired to safely carry out safety and emergency procedures on board.
NationalityOpen to all nationalities as of 2025–2026Historically restricted to Singapore Citizens/PRs; reopened to international applicants — check the official SIA careers portal for current intake criteria.
MedicalCAAS Class 1 Medical standardFull medical check-up conducted as part of the selection process — not required upfront at application stage.
ExperienceNo prior flying experience requiredAb Initio programme — zero experience is the baseline assumption.
Training CostFully sponsored by SIA — candidates pay nothingSIA covers ground school, flight training, accommodation during training, and type rating in full.

Nationality Note

SIA's Ab Initio programme was historically restricted to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. It has reopened to all nationalities for recent recruitment cycles, but this status can change. Always confirm directly on the official SIA careers portal before applying — being based in Singapore for training is a practical requirement regardless of passport.

Section 02 & 03

The selection process, stage by stage

SIA receives over 10,000 applications per cycle for approximately 100–120 cadet places. The process runs across four main stages and takes an average of 4 months from application to Offer of Employment, plus 2–3 months before training commences.

1
Online — Rolling Intake

Online Application

Submit your application through the official SIA careers portal only. SIA explicitly states it does not use any third-party agencies for pilot recruitment — any platform claiming to represent SIA is not authorised.

  • Academic certificates and transcripts (GCE O/A Levels, Diploma, or Degree)
  • Passport copy
  • Passport-size photograph
2
Aon Platform — Own Device

Computer Assessment Test (CAT)

A comprehensive battery of tests completed on your own device after receiving an invitation link. Based on candidate reports, the CAT covers six modules:

  • Cognitive Ability — logical reasoning, pattern recognition, inductive analysis
  • Numerical Reasoning — arithmetic, algebra, data interpretation under time pressure
  • Psychomotor Skills — tube/obstacle navigation test tracking a moving target
  • Multitasking Assessment — three simultaneous tasks and background event tracking
  • Spatial Awareness — reading aircraft instruments, visualising patterns in 3D
  • Personality Profiling — untimed; consistency is checked automatically

In-Person · Singapore

Preliminary & Final Interview

Two rounds of in-person panel interviews at SIA's offices, in formal office attire.

3A · Preliminary Interview

Why you want to be a pilot, awareness of industry challenges, technical aviation knowledge, recent aviation incidents, personality and character questions. Candidates who fail can typically reapply after ~6 months.

3B · Final Interview

A more senior panel goes deeper on technical knowledge, competency, and long-term career perspective. Generic or rehearsed answers are flagged. Failure here carries a longer waiting period before reapplication.

4
SIA Medical Team · Singapore

Medical Check-Up

A full CAAS Class 1 standard medical examination — vision (myopia ≤800°, astigmatism ≤300°, fully corrected), hearing, cardiovascular health, physical fitness, and general medical history. The Offer of Employment follows successful completion, with training typically commencing 2–3 months later.

Pilots Academy Note

SIA processes a very high volume of applications and communication timelines can be long — up to several months between stages. Do not read silence as rejection. Once shortlisted, the pace picks up, but the initial wait is normal.

Pilots Academy Tip

The psychomotor and multitasking modules are hardest to prepare for on short notice — they test coordination and divided attention, not knowledge. Start practising tracking tasks and dual-task simulations weeks in advance. Cognitive and numerical modules respond well to structured practice on aptitude test banks.

Section 04

Training structure & qualification

Successful candidates train through Singapore Flying College (SFC), operating in Singapore at Seletar Airport and overseas — historically at a partner facility in Adelaide, Australia. The full journey from selection to operational Second Officer takes approximately 3 years.

Fees, bond & what happens if you leave early

SIA's Ab Initio programme is unique among major airline cadet programmes in that candidates pay absolutely nothing upfront. SIA funds the entire training pipeline — in exchange for a long-term commitment.

Cost CategoryAmountPaid By Whom

The bond — what it means in practice

Selected candidates are required to serve the entire duration of the training programme (~3 years from selection to operational role), plus 7 years from the date of appointment as First Officer.

If you break the bond

Resigning before the bond completes requires repaying a prorated portion of training costs. Industry estimates place total training investment — and maximum bond liability — at SGD 250,000–400,000 (~₹1.56–₹2.5 crore). SIA does not publish exact figures.

Pilots Academy Honest Note

The 7-year bond from First Officer appointment, on top of ~3 years of training, means you're effectively committed to SIA for a decade from selection if you want to avoid financial liability on exit. That's a significant life commitment — but consider what you get in return: zero training fees, a monthly training allowance, and arguably the most prestigious airline job in Asia-Pacific at the end of it. Read the bond document in full before signing anything.

Section 06

Salary progression & career path

All SIA pilot salaries are paid in Singapore Dollars. Approximate INR conversions use 1 SGD ≈ ₹62 — check current rates, as SGD/INR fluctuates meaningfully over a training-and-career timeline.

Career StageAnnual Salary (SGD)Approx. Monthly (SGD)Approx. INR / Month
Training Allowance (cadet phase)N/A — stipend only~1,500–2,500~₹93,000–₹1.55L

Flight-hour pay is additional: SGD 82/hour for First Officers, SGD 125/hour for Captains, on top of base salary. There is no guaranteed minimum monthly flying hours — earnings vary with roster intensity. Singapore levies personal income tax, so these figures are gross, not tax-free.

COMMAND UPGRADE

12–15 years to Captain

Noticeably slower than at LCCs or Gulf carriers — but the Captain salary at the end of the wait is among the highest in Asia.

PROFIT SHARING

8–9 months' bonus

In recent post-COVID strong-performance years, SIA employees have received bonuses of 8–9 months of basic salary.

LONG-HAUL PAY

Allowances add up

Significant long-haul, night-stop, and sector allowances meaningfully increase total take-home, particularly on Europe, USA, and Australia routes.

Beyond Salary

What SIA pilots receive

Annual Free Travel

Once-a-year free travel to any SIA-operated destination.

Discounted Travel

Unlimited discounted travel for pilots and eligible family on SIA and partner networks.

Medical & Insurance

Comprehensive medical, dental, and insurance coverage for pilots and families.

Housing Allowance

SIA doesn't provide company housing, but pays an allowance toward rent in Singapore.

Awareness of what's happening in aviation globally — recent incidents, industry trends, SIA-specific news.

Judgment & Resilience

How do you respond to setbacks? Can you commit to a decision under pressure without overriding others?

Long-Term Commitment

SIA looks for candidates who genuinely understand the 10-year commitment — not those seeing this as a 2-year stepping stone.

Teamwork & CRM Mindset

Multi-crew operations require genuine crew collaboration — "pilot-in-command" arrogance is actively screened out.

Choose EFTA if…

You can afford ~₹1.83 crore, meet EFTA's academic thresholds, and are willing to base in Dubai. EFTA gets you flying sooner and opens faster access to high Captain earnings.

Choose SIA if…

You can't or don't want to self-fund training, meet SIA's academic requirements, and are willing to commit long-term to Singapore. Arguably the best risk-free deal in global aviation for a cadet.

Both programmes close doors to other options for the duration of the bond — that's the real cost of both, regardless of fee structure. Choose the one that matches both your financial situation and your 10-year career vision.

Section 07

Frequently asked questions

Every question here reflects real conversations from candidates and their families — not generic brochure text.

About the Programme
What is the SIA Ab Initio Cadet Pilot Programme?
A fully sponsored, zero-upfront-cost pathway from zero flying experience to a Commercial Pilot Licence, type rating on an SIA fleet aircraft, and a Second Officer role at Singapore Airlines — in exchange for a 7-year bond from the date you become a First Officer.
Is this programme really free — I don't pay anything?
Correct. Unlike other major cadet programmes (Air Arabia, EFTA, IndiGo, Air India), SIA charges no application, assessment, or training fees, and pays a monthly training allowance (estimated SGD 1,500–2,500). This is the exception, not the rule, in global cadet programmes.
How long does the whole process take?
Selection to Offer of Employment takes ~4 months on average, with training commencing 2–3 months later. Full training takes ~3 years — so application to operational Second Officer is roughly 3.5–4 years total.
What licence and qualifications do I earn?
A CAAS-approved ATPL with Instrument Rating (or MPL, depending on the SFC route) plus a type rating on a specific SIA fleet aircraft — A320, A350, B737 MAX, B777, B787, or A380.
Where is the training conducted?
Ground school and simulator training at Singapore Flying College, Seletar Airport. Flying training may include overseas time — historically Adelaide, Australia. Type rating is conducted at the Singapore Airlines Training Centre.
What aircraft will I fly when I join SIA?
As a Second Officer, you'll typically join a long-haul widebody fleet — A350, A380, Boeing 777-300ER, or 787 — depending on SIA's requirements at the time of joining.
Am I Eligible?
What academic qualifications do I actually need?
The stated minimum is 5 GCE 'O' Level credits including English, Mathematics, and a Science subject. Given the 1% acceptance rate, most successful candidates hold 'A' Levels, a Diploma, or a Degree. Strong Maths and Physics performance correlates with clearing the aptitude tests.
Can Indian students apply for this programme?
Yes — open to all nationalities for the current Ab Initio intake. However, being based in Singapore during training is a practical requirement, and the programme is not designed as a pathway back to Indian airline employment.
Do I need to be a Singapore Citizen or PR?
No — not for the current recruitment cycle. As of 2025–2026 the programme is open to all nationalities, a change from the historical Citizens/PRs-only position. Always confirm current intake criteria on the official SIA careers page.
I wear glasses — does that disqualify me?
No. Myopia up to 800 degrees and astigmatism up to 300 degrees are acceptable, provided fully correctable with optical aids. Corrective eye surgery candidates must have had pre-surgery measurements within these limits.
Is there an age limit for the Ab Initio programme?
SIA does not publish a formal upper age limit. Given the 7-year bond on top of ~3 years of training, the realistic competitive sweet spot is 18–25.
I don't have A Levels — can I still apply with just 5 O Level credits?
Yes, it meets the stated minimum, but you'll be competing against many candidates with higher qualifications. Strong CAT and interview performance can compensate for a lower academic baseline.
Do I need any prior aviation experience or a PPL?
No — the programme assumes zero flying experience. Genuine aviation interest helps in interview preparation but is not a requirement.
Application & Selection Process
How do I apply, and what documents do I need?
Apply through the official SIA careers portal only, searching for "Ab Initio Cadet Pilot (Singapore)." Upload academic certificates, a passport copy, and a passport-size photograph. Never pay any intermediary claiming to facilitate SIA cadet applications.
How long does SIA take to respond after I apply?
Given the volume of applications, initial shortlisting can take several weeks to months. The full process from application to Offer of Employment averages 4 months; some candidates report 5–6 months or longer.
What exactly does the Computer Assessment Test involve?
Cognitive reasoning, numerical reasoning, a psychomotor tracking task, a multitasking module, spatial/instrument reading assessment, and an untimed personality questionnaire cross-checked for consistency.
Can I retake the test or reapply if I fail?
Candidates who fail at the Preliminary Interview can generally reapply after ~6 months. Failure at later stages carries a potentially longer reapplication period; total attempts allowed are not published.
What kind of questions come up in the interviews?
Why you want to be a pilot, why SIA specifically, industry challenges, technical questions on control surfaces and aerodynamics, recent aviation incidents, and competency questions on pressure and teamwork.
Is the final interview harder than the preliminary?
Yes — conducted by more senior personnel, going deeper on technical knowledge and long-term career perspective. The preliminary functions partly as calibration for the final panel.
What happens at the medical stage?
A full CAAS Class 1 examination — vision, hearing, cardiovascular, physical health, and medical history. If you have known conditions that might affect a Class 1 medical, get a general assessment early.
Training
Do I have to live in Singapore during training?
Yes — ground school, simulator training, and type rating are conducted in Singapore. Flying may include overseas time (historically Adelaide), with SIA arranging and funding accommodation.
Can I choose which aircraft I train on?
No — fleet allocation is based on SIA's requirements at the time of training. Cadets typically join a long-haul widebody fleet as Second Officers.
What if I fail during training — is the programme terminated?
SIA monitors performance throughout training. Candidates who don't meet standards may receive additional support or extended training; in serious cases the programme can be terminated. Bond and cost-recovery specifics for training failure are set out in the cadet pilot agreement.
Money, Bond & Career
Is SIA's salary as good as Emirates or Air Arabia?
Not immediately in absolute terms — SIA's early-career pay is lower than EFTA graduates can eventually earn, and Singapore income is taxable. Long-term, SIA Captains on widebody long-haul routes earn SGD 285,000–360,000/year, with profit-sharing and benefits adding meaningfully. The biggest difference is the command upgrade timeline: 12–15 years at SIA vs. 5–8 at Emirates.
What are the benefits beyond salary?
Annual free travel, unlimited discounted travel for pilots and family, comprehensive medical/dental/life insurance, housing allowance, profit-sharing bonuses (recently 8–9 months of basic salary), and career development options.
How does the bond affect my future career flexibility?
It's a genuine constraint — roughly 10 years total (3 training + 7 bond) before you can leave without financial penalty. After the bond, your CAAS ATPL is fully transferable, though a new type rating may be needed for a different fleet family.
What does the career path look like after completing the bond?
Typically a Senior First Officer or recently upgraded Captain stage — a strong launchpad to Gulf carriers, European airlines, other international operations, or continuing to upgrade toward SIA Captain, Training Captain, Technical Pilot, Fleet Manager, or Management roles.
Is this the best cadet programme in the world for someone from India?
Depends what you're optimising for. Zero financial risk and Asia's most prestigious carrier — SIA is hard to beat. Faster career timeline or India-based — IndiGo/Air India are more practical. Tax-free Gulf career — EFTA/Air Arabia. SIA's unique position: no upfront investment, extreme prestige, and the strongest long-term earning ceiling in Asia, for a decade-long commitment and the most competitive selection of any programme in this guide.
What happens to the bond if SIA makes me redundant or runs into financial trouble?
Bond obligation and repayment terms in a redundancy or restructuring scenario are subject to the specific employment contract. SIA managed the COVID-19 downturn without mass pilot redundancies, opting for pay cuts and voluntary leave — but confirm the actual contract language before signing any bond agreement.
