From zero flying hours to Second Officer at one of the world's finest airlines.
A fully sponsored, zero-cost cadet pathway to a CAAS ATPL and a widebody long-haul cockpit — in exchange for one of the most competitive selection processes, and one of the longest commitments, in global aviation.
Am I eligible?
SIA's Ab Initio programme is a fully sponsored, zero-cost pathway — SIA pays for everything. The trade-off is a rigorous selection process and a 7-year bond from the date you become a First Officer.
| Criterion | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Education | GCE 'A' Level, Polytechnic Diploma, or Degree — OR — minimum 5 GCE 'O' Level credits including English, Mathematics, and a Science subject, taken at one sitting | Strong academic foundation in Maths and Physics is essential for the aptitude assessment even if not formally required at minimum-entry level. |
| Vision | Myopia not more than 800 degrees; astigmatism not more than 300 degrees — fully correctable with optical aids | Pre-surgery visual acuity must also meet this requirement for candidates who have undergone corrective eye surgery. |
| Height | Minimum 1.58 m | Required to safely carry out safety and emergency procedures on board. |
| Nationality | Open to all nationalities as of 2025–2026 | Historically restricted to Singapore Citizens/PRs; reopened to international applicants — check the official SIA careers portal for current intake criteria. |
| Medical | CAAS Class 1 Medical standard | Full medical check-up conducted as part of the selection process — not required upfront at application stage. |
| Experience | No prior flying experience required | Ab Initio programme — zero experience is the baseline assumption. |
| Training Cost | Fully sponsored by SIA — candidates pay nothing | SIA covers ground school, flight training, accommodation during training, and type rating in full. |
Nationality Note
SIA's Ab Initio programme was historically restricted to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. It has reopened to all nationalities for recent recruitment cycles, but this status can change. Always confirm directly on the official SIA careers portal before applying — being based in Singapore for training is a practical requirement regardless of passport.
The selection process, stage by stage
SIA receives over 10,000 applications per cycle for approximately 100–120 cadet places. The process runs across four main stages and takes an average of 4 months from application to Offer of Employment, plus 2–3 months before training commences.
Online Application
Submit your application through the official SIA careers portal only. SIA explicitly states it does not use any third-party agencies for pilot recruitment — any platform claiming to represent SIA is not authorised.
- Academic certificates and transcripts (GCE O/A Levels, Diploma, or Degree)
- Passport copy
- Passport-size photograph
Computer Assessment Test (CAT)
A comprehensive battery of tests completed on your own device after receiving an invitation link. Based on candidate reports, the CAT covers six modules:
- Cognitive Ability — logical reasoning, pattern recognition, inductive analysis
- Numerical Reasoning — arithmetic, algebra, data interpretation under time pressure
- Psychomotor Skills — tube/obstacle navigation test tracking a moving target
- Multitasking Assessment — three simultaneous tasks and background event tracking
- Spatial Awareness — reading aircraft instruments, visualising patterns in 3D
- Personality Profiling — untimed; consistency is checked automatically
Preliminary & Final Interview
Two rounds of in-person panel interviews at SIA's offices, in formal office attire.
3A · Preliminary Interview
Why you want to be a pilot, awareness of industry challenges, technical aviation knowledge, recent aviation incidents, personality and character questions. Candidates who fail can typically reapply after ~6 months.
3B · Final Interview
A more senior panel goes deeper on technical knowledge, competency, and long-term career perspective. Generic or rehearsed answers are flagged. Failure here carries a longer waiting period before reapplication.
Medical Check-Up
A full CAAS Class 1 standard medical examination — vision (myopia ≤800°, astigmatism ≤300°, fully corrected), hearing, cardiovascular health, physical fitness, and general medical history. The Offer of Employment follows successful completion, with training typically commencing 2–3 months later.
Pilots Academy Note
SIA processes a very high volume of applications and communication timelines can be long — up to several months between stages. Do not read silence as rejection. Once shortlisted, the pace picks up, but the initial wait is normal.
Pilots Academy Tip
The psychomotor and multitasking modules are hardest to prepare for on short notice — they test coordination and divided attention, not knowledge. Start practising tracking tasks and dual-task simulations weeks in advance. Cognitive and numerical modules respond well to structured practice on aptitude test banks.
Training structure & qualification
Successful candidates train through Singapore Flying College (SFC), operating in Singapore at Seletar Airport and overseas — historically at a partner facility in Adelaide, Australia. The full journey from selection to operational Second Officer takes approximately 3 years.
| Phase | Content | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Ground School | Air Navigation, Meteorology, Air Law, Aircraft Technical, Human Performance, CRM | Singapore — SFC Seletar |
| Simulator Training | Instrument flying, aircraft handling, abnormal & emergency procedures (FNPT + full-motion sims) | Singapore — SFC Seletar |
| Basic Flight Training (CPL) | ~150–200 hours — solo flying, cross-country navigation, instrument rating | Overseas (historically Adelaide) and/or Seletar |
| Advanced Flight Training | Multi-engine, multi-crew operations, line-oriented flight training (LOFT) | Singapore / Overseas |
| Type Rating | Fleet-specific — A320, A350, B737 MAX, B777, B787, or A380 | Singapore Airlines Training Centre |
| Line Training | Supervised revenue flights with a Training Captain before full line release | Revenue operations, SIA network |
What you actually get
Upon completing the full SIA cadet programme: a CAAS ATPL or MPL with full multi-engine instrument rating, a type rating on your allocated SIA fleet aircraft, and a Second Officer role at one of the world's top-rated airlines. Training cost to you: zero. Bond commitment: duration of training plus 7 years from date of appointment as First Officer.
Fees, bond & what happens if you leave early
SIA's Ab Initio programme is unique among major airline cadet programmes in that candidates pay absolutely nothing upfront. SIA funds the entire training pipeline — in exchange for a long-term commitment.
| Cost Category | Amount | Paid By Whom |
|---|---|---|
| Ground school & theory training | Included | SIA |
| Flight training hours (CPL / MPL) | Included | SIA |
| Overseas training costs & accommodation | Included | SIA |
| Type rating (fleet-specific) | Included | SIA |
| Application & selection fees | None | N/A — no candidate fees at any stage |
| Monthly training allowance to candidate | ~SGD 1,500–2,500 (industry estimate) | Paid to cadet by SIA during training |
| Upfront programme fee to candidate | SGD 0 | Not charged |
The bond — what it means in practice
Selected candidates are required to serve the entire duration of the training programme (~3 years from selection to operational role), plus 7 years from the date of appointment as First Officer.
If you break the bond
Resigning before the bond completes requires repaying a prorated portion of training costs. Industry estimates place total training investment — and maximum bond liability — at SGD 250,000–400,000 (~₹1.56–₹2.5 crore). SIA does not publish exact figures.
Pilots Academy Honest Note
The 7-year bond from First Officer appointment, on top of ~3 years of training, means you're effectively committed to SIA for a decade from selection if you want to avoid financial liability on exit. That's a significant life commitment — but consider what you get in return: zero training fees, a monthly training allowance, and arguably the most prestigious airline job in Asia-Pacific at the end of it. Read the bond document in full before signing anything.
Salary progression & career path
All SIA pilot salaries are paid in Singapore Dollars. Approximate INR conversions use 1 SGD ≈ ₹62 — check current rates, as SGD/INR fluctuates meaningfully over a training-and-career timeline.
| Career Stage | Annual Salary (SGD) | Approx. Monthly (SGD) | Approx. INR / Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Training Allowance (cadet phase) | N/A — stipend only | ~1,500–2,500 | ~₹93,000–₹1.55L |
| Second Officer (pre-line check) | 24,000–75,000 | ~2,000–6,250 | ~₹1.24L–₹3.9L |
| Second Officer (experienced) | 75,000–90,000 | ~6,250–7,500 | ~₹3.9L–₹4.65L |
| First Officer (newly promoted) | 94,000–120,000 | ~7,833–10,000 | ~₹4.86L–₹6.2L |
| First Officer (senior) | 150,000–195,000 | ~12,500–16,250 | ~₹7.75L–₹10.1L |
| Captain (newly upgraded) | 235,000–250,000 | ~19,583–20,833 | ~₹12.1L–₹12.9L |
| Captain (senior, long-haul widebody) | 285,000–360,000 | ~23,750–30,000 | ~₹14.7L–₹18.6L |
Flight-hour pay is additional: SGD 82/hour for First Officers, SGD 125/hour for Captains, on top of base salary. There is no guaranteed minimum monthly flying hours — earnings vary with roster intensity. Singapore levies personal income tax, so these figures are gross, not tax-free.
12–15 years to Captain
Noticeably slower than at LCCs or Gulf carriers — but the Captain salary at the end of the wait is among the highest in Asia.
8–9 months' bonus
In recent post-COVID strong-performance years, SIA employees have received bonuses of 8–9 months of basic salary.
Allowances add up
Significant long-haul, night-stop, and sector allowances meaningfully increase total take-home, particularly on Europe, USA, and Australia routes.

Choose EFTA if…
You can afford ~₹1.83 crore, meet EFTA's academic thresholds, and are willing to base in Dubai. EFTA gets you flying sooner and opens faster access to high Captain earnings.
Choose SIA if…
You can't or don't want to self-fund training, meet SIA's academic requirements, and are willing to commit long-term to Singapore. Arguably the best risk-free deal in global aviation for a cadet.
Both programmes close doors to other options for the duration of the bond — that's the real cost of both, regardless of fee structure. Choose the one that matches both your financial situation and your 10-year career vision.
